My Good Friend Memory Wire!

I took a trip down memory lane when I selected this package of memory wire from Artbeads.com.

I sort of knew I wanted to try using memory wire with the crystals I selected, but I took some time to look through the wire & chain section of the catalog first.

After making myself crazy over ALL the possibilities, I stuck with my good old friend!

I'll never forget the first time I discovered memory wire! It was probably 20 years ago and as a new beader, I was getting bored with regular stringing.

I picked up the Joann, Etc. magazine and inside was a memory wire project for kids using rainbow colored 6/0 e-beads in a random pattern. I had never seen memory wire before and thought it looked like so much fun.

The girls in the magazine were making 2 strand bracelets if I remember correctly. I bought the memory wire and the 6/0 e-beads and loved them, but thought they seemed a little bit juvenile for me to wear to work.

It was then I discovered the tiny metallic beads in the embroidery area of the craft store. A whole new world opened up and I began making 6 strand memory wire bracelets strung in a variety of patterns using those tiny metallic and matte seed beads.

Since I have worked in the same place for 20 years, I often run into people who have told me they still have and wear those memory wire bracelets that I made like a mad-person so long ago and gave to anyone I came in contact with! Hmm...maybe it's time to try making one just for old time sake.

As you know, sometimes something old becomes new again!! :)

Swarovski Siam

Okay, first of all, I love how this siam swarovski crystal round appears to be floating in mid-air!! :)

This is a photo from the Artbeads.com online catalog. It's a 4mm round and so darn cute!

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I just received a package in the mail from Artbeads.com.

I'm looking forward to creating a fall bracelet design from these ultra sparkly swarovski crystal beads!!

I am sticking with the original plan to use wire and will mention that more tomorrow and show you what I have in mind.

I haven't tried putting this all together yet and am hopeful I can make something cool! :) We shall see!

Beads in the Mail!!

Yay! It's a great day when beads come in the mail!

I received a package from Artbeads.com today which was filled with Swarovski crystals for a fall design!!!

I selected these crystals from the Swarovski Pendants category on the Artbeads.com site.

I don't want to give them all away on the first day of opening the package, but I received several different colors in this 7mm briolette.

This one is TOPAZ....perfect for a SPARKLY fall design! As usual when I select beads, I have a general design idea. Also as usual, when I receive them, I start thinking of other designs!!

Why is that?? I think I just like getting into a creative zone so much, I can't stick with the original plan!

I can't wait to show you the rest!! :)

Featured Designer: Shaterra Clay Studio

Happy Friday!

Shaterra Clay Studio is this week's featured designer! I just happened to stumble upon her etsy site and noticed the Ohio State University pieces and wondered if she was a fellow central-Ohioan.

After finding her blog, I discovered we are both suburban dwellers of the same metro area. I LOVE THAT!

Once I discovered her other pieces, I was having a "wow" moment. Here are a few of my favorite pieces of Shaterra Clay Studio.

Perfect Purple!

Wow, this is some fabulous hemp cord that is just calling out to be diamond-dusted!!

Rainbow diamond dust to be exact! The rainbow glitter has an irridescence to it which brings out blues, pinks and purples, PERFECT!

This hemp cord is unpolished and was found at HempBasics.com.

The purple will be beautiful for fall and I'm getting visions of lots of fringe with bead dangles!!

I'll have to experiment with beads before I decide which beads will fit on the cord and will go nicely with the GLITTER!

The weekend is fast approaching, YAY!!

Glitter & Beads...a perfect match!

I recently mentioned that I wanted to try to glitter some hemp cord and then use it in a jewelry design. I had hoped to have time to do that last weekend, but it didn't work out that way.

I have high hopes for this weekend!! In the mean time, I came across this photo of some 6/0 e-beads that I used in the 12 bead woven bauble that I covered in mod podge and diamond dust glitter.

I thought these turned out so FUN and I made a bunch of the red bead baubles to hang from simple silver chains and give as gifts.

My favorite part of the red-glittery bauble necklace was the diamond dust residue it left on people's chest who were wearing it. Is that wrong? I don't think so considering all the products that include shimer and glitter. :)

Why not spread a little sparkle? (literally!)

"Sparkle" without Sparkle!

After yesterday's sparkly post, I was thinking about some jewelry I have made that had a "sparkly" element without using crystals.

This stone bracelet was made on stretchy cord and incorporates a thin wire star as the "sparkly" aspect. I love the fact you can use fairly simple beads and designs while still achieving some impact or "wow" sparkle factor.

The citrine beads in between each stone are glass bicones and do add a little brightness, but no sparkle.

I wore this bracelet every day for a couple of months last year after making it and it made me so happy when it got noticed! Not because I thought I was so great, but because I thought it was fun and glad that the people noticing thought so too!

When you go down memory lane and look at the pieces you have made over time, it's interesting to see the "lessons learned" and the evolutionary design process...one idea leads to another!

How was your Monday?

I was just thinking that Monday mornings definitely require much more sparkle than any others.

During this morning's elevator ride up to my floor, someone asked how I was. My first thought was, "sparkly, very sparkly"!

I noticed that I had on the rainbow bracelet from my book which includes rows of 7 swarovski rainbow colors of 6mm bicones (Roy G. Biv - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet) on sky blue bead wire. Perfect for a monday morning!

I'm going to have to make an effort to see if I habitually grab more sparkly jewelry on Mondays... I have a sneaking suspicion that I do...how about you?

Why not put your swarovski crystals to work...get out there and make someone's Monday!

Let's Make Happy Jewelry!

Needless to say, these colorfully adorable stone chips stole my heart the minute I saw them! :)

They are everything I love in a non-sparkly bead...colorful, cheerful, happy, sweet.

Now, whether I am going to use these with the focal stones I mentioned in Wednesday's post, I'm not sure.

My initial thought was memory wire with some colorful swarovski crystal bicones mixed in for sparkle.

My next thought was to make 4 standalone strands about 2 inches long and use them as a focal piece across the wrist with a band of heavy hemp cord braiding.

Regardless of how these are used, it will be one HAPPY piece of jewelry!! :)

On Lori's blog and more than 1 etsy site, you will find beaded dog collars, spiral rope bracelets, polymer buttons, fused glass pendants AND cross-stitch patterns turned into beaded artwork!

WOW! I was amazed at the fact Lori recycles "float glass" and works it into glass cabochons! So creative!!

Is there Sparkly Hemp Cord?

I've been thinking about the stones from yesterday's post and wondering how they would work with hemp cord. I think it will have to be at least a medium weight cording so I'll have to check the hole size.

Once that is worked out, I have this thought, it might be a little crazy, but what do you think about sparkly hemp cord? I haven't had a chance to google it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it actually exists.

If it doesn't, I have to believe that with all my crazy crafting antics, I should be able to figure out how to glitter some up.

Did you ever use yarn as a kid, dipped in white glue and then wrapped in spirography designs over a blown up balloon? Once the yarn dries, you pop the balloon and pull it out so you have a cool artsy form. I vaguely remember using glitter on the yarn before the glue dried.

You know, I think I could use the white glue and glitter approach with the hemp cord!!!! Who doesn't love glitter? I have used white glue and glitter on e-beads before and the extra benefit was leaving just a little bit of sparkle on my neck. Yep, that's what I'm going to do.

I just had a chance to google "sparkly hemp cord" and nothing came up...

What do you think?

Stones for Summer or for Fall?

Why do these stones make me think fall? They aren't necessarily all earthy colors, but there is something about them that makes me think "sweaters" and "jackets" are required.

This year I am going to strive to come up with a new design for these. Last year and even the year before I got hooked on using these with glass pearls and a little bit of swarovski sparkle. I might use the same beads, but the same old design is ready to be retired for a while.

I love finding contrasting colored glass beads to complement these stones. You know, now that I am looking at these, I think these could actually have been made into great summer jewelry designs.

Hmm, I might have to rethink my whole stone philosophy! Do you have a stone philosophy or do you use them in every design and every season?

Getting Ready for Seasonal Change?

It's not really possible to rebel against seasonal changes, but if I could, I WOULD!

Since that would not get me anywhere in reality, my only option is to embrace it!

I have been wearing my yellow swarovski crystal drop pendant necklace quite a bit over the summer.

Just before our summer vacation I mentioned these orange drop pendants that I ordered from Fire Mountain Gems.

I think it's time to make a new one. Since I have two of these, I am going to make one for a coworker as well. It always makes me happy to surprise people with jewelry! :)

Ribbon in the Bead Aisle

I have something fun to share today that I came across this weekend while shopping at Michael's Crafts Store. I stopped in to look at polymer clay and accessories, but I just couldn't walk by the bead aisles without taking a peek!

I don't get to Michael's that often and I had my Joann 40% off coupon which is still accepted there, yay!

I saw several new lines of beads/findings and one of them included a package of fabric ribbon.

The package reads, "Bead Landing - BELLA BOHO Ribbon". There is a total of 4 ft of ribbon on this package and the most interesting thing about this ribbon is that one of the bracelets in my book is made from this exact ribbon!!!!!!!

How cool is that?! I originally found the ribbon at Joann's in the "buy by the yard" section and it reminded me of a framed work of art. That's what inspired me to do something simple with it so you could really see it on the wrist without much embellishment.

The final project involved a tiny bit of cutting, 30 seconds of ironing and quick and easy chain band. It's still one of my favorites. The day I made it for the first time I slept in it because I loved it so much. It made me think of when I was little I had gotten the cutest pair of buckle shoes and wanted to sleep in them :)

Is that weird? Hmm, gosh it seems so "normal" to me, but now I am wondering if I should have written that in my book. Maybe people like weirdness!! :) That's what I am going to believe!

This Week's Project: Re-worked Ring

This week's project was actually made by one of my co-workers.

Sandy recently purchased this ring form at a discount department store and it was beaded with inexpensive purply toned beads.

Since many central Ohioans are OSU buckeye fans, Sandy got the idea to remove the purple beads and replace them with red and gray/silver beads to show her team spirit!

I just LOVE the results!

She mentioned on Friday that she had been receiving lots of looks and compliments. It looked great with her OSU logo gear.

What a cool idea! I can imagine making this in lots of team colors for friends.

Featured Designer: Marie Cramp of Skye Jewels

We are so lucky....it's Friday again, yay!!

I've been looking forward to sharing this week's featured designer with you because she's amazingly multi-talented!

Marie Cramp of Skye Jewels has four kids, is a jewelry designer, scrapbooker and card maker "with an intense passion for creating" who lives with her family in Calgary Alberta, Canada.

I LOVE that Marie does not seem to be intimidated by anything and jumps right in to begin experimenting with various mediums.

On her blog, you can find some great stories and pictures of her experiments with felting, glass work, tile pendants, etc. I don't think there is anything she can't do!!

Marie also has her work in a couple of etsy shops and a website!! AND...if that isn't enough, she has had her jewelry designs in many issues of Bead Trends magazine!!

I'm feeling very inspired!

Expanding my Craft Inventory

Roller, rulers, pasta machines! Sounds fun!

Brayers, polymer clay guns and molds...wow!

Texture makers, gold leaf and pearl powders....goodness!

I have to admit the look and sound of all the wonderful array of polymer clay tools is adding to the excitement of working with clay.

At this point, the only thing standing in my way is a couple more work days and a room that is already packed full of beading/crafting supplies.

Am I going to have room for new stuff? Yikes! The thought hadn't crossed my mind until this moment. The good thing is, it looks like most of these supplies are fairly small and shouldn't take up much space. I just need to make a little...

Back to the tools and accessories....if you can part with any more of your polymer expertise, PLEASE let me know your thoughts on what I need to get started. I am guessing rollers and rulers, but not sure what else.

How about rubber stamps? Do you use those in clay designs? (Thanks for your help!)

Polymer Clay Overview

After shouting out for polymer clay guidance yesterday, I was thrilled to get so much info in return, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I wanted to put together a quick overview of what I have learned as a result:

• Learn the basics first such as conditioning your clay and baking, etc. before you get started
• YouTube videos offer many tutorials

• Take a "basics" class
• Trial and error is great way to discover your own style

• Join a local clay guild
• Purchase step by step tutorials on Etsy

• Try different clays before buying a bunch to determine which you like best
• Sand baked pieces with wet sand paper from the hardware store and rub w/denim
• Sanding/buffing and use of transluscent clay

The most surprising was the POLYMER CLAY OVEN!! Seriously, where have I been? This was news to me or if I knew about this before, I blotted it out of my memory. Very interesting! Who doesn't love a new appliance?

Where to Begin with Clay?

I'm hoping to get some input from everyone on the best way to get started learning about polymer clay.

Should I take a 6 week class (one evening a week), watch videos, read books or all of the above?


I would love to hear your thoughts. What worked for you, what didn't? What would you do differently in hindsight?

I am hoping to learn from your trials, errors and successes if you wouldn't mind taking a minute to share.

This seems to be something I am feeling strongly about learning and since I enjoy crafting and
making jewelry, it makes sense. What do you think? THANKS SO MUCH!

Polymer Clay Upclose & Personal

I had a great Saturday and it's just getting better! We are heading for the drive-in so I'm thinking I better make this quick!

Earlier today I met a wonderful artist and author, Debbie Jackson. She is a fellow North Light Books author and lives right here in my city. Her book is entitled, Polymer Clay Jewelry. (I am now a proud owner of a copy too and can't wait to begin learning!)

I had no idea until yesterday when I did a search in order to find a local polymer clay class. Her name came up and I sent her an email. We met today at the "Studios on High" gallery where she shows/sells her fabulous work and book.

Again, I have to say, what a great day!

She is such a nice person and fun to talk to! Her energy is contagious! Her work is so beautiful and makes me want to learn!

Featured Designer: Nicole Campanella

Yay, Friday!

This week's featured designer is probably someone you already know or have visited at one time or another.

Nicole's blog is entitled, "Beadwright" and she describes herself as "owner, designer, author, artist".

If you get a chance to pop over to her etsy site, she has beads, beading kits and her instructional books available!

I happened to drop by her blog earlier in the week and loved her August 30th post.

She made this necklace with chain hanging from a woven piece in white and she described it as "elegant punk", I not only love the necklace, but love that description and completely agree!

Nicole mentioned that she couldn't get up from where she was sitting after making the necklace so she decided to make the bracelet above too.

Now, to me, this is not something you just sit there and throw together in a few minutes... Gorgeous!

Possible Peyote Project

I so enjoy looking at the tubes of 6/0 e-beads at the craft store. It always makes me want to get out the needle and thread and start on a simple peyote cuff....

Maybe that is what I will make this weekend, it has been a while, but is always very fulfilling when done.

I'm thinking this tube of metallic gold e-beads will make a great cuff that you can wear every day.

I might be able to get 5 rows out of this tube and think the metallic gold will be so eye-catching! I'll keep you posted!

I'm so excited to have a 4 day weekend, I just have to be careful not to think I'm going to accomplish so many things that I get overwhelmed.

There will definitely be a trip to the library involved AND some beading! I hope you are all so fortunate to get a few days off too!

Rings Galore

I am so excited to start gluing things to these ring forms!

I have lots of great buttons and miscellaneous cool objects that would be PERFECT as rings!

I've tried different glues before, but have never been 100% satisfied with them.

I would love to hear from anyone out there who has successfully glued things to ring forms like this.

I found this package on my Joann etc. trip, but am not sure why Plaid calls it "Holiday Glitz". I do, however, LOVE the name "Holiday Glitz"!

I can't wait to glitz these up and bling them up and sparkle and maybe even weird them up! :)
